The thinnest smartphone currently on the market is the Oppo A72 5G, which measures just 7.9mm thick. This sleek device boasts a 6.5-inch FHD+ display, a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 processor, and a 5G-ready antenna. It also has a long-lasting battery and a quad-camera setup for versatile photography.


But the Oppo A72 5G isn’t the first phone to hold the title of world’s thinnest. That honor belongs to the Vivo X5 Max, which was released in 2014 and measured just 4.75mm thick. Despite its slim profile, the X5 Max was still able to pack in impressive specs, including a 5.5-inch 1080p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor, and a 13MP rear camera.


One of the thinnest phones ever made was the Gionee Elife S5.1, which measured just 5.1mm thick. Released in 2014, this device had a 4.8-inch AMOLED display, an octa-core processor, and a 8MP camera. However, its thinness came at a cost – the phone had a non-removable battery, meaning it couldn’t be easily replaced if it stopped working.


Another contender for the title of world’s thinnest phone is the Motorola Razr, which was released in 2020 and measures just 6.8mm thick when closed. This phone boasts a foldable design, allowing it to transform from a smartphone into a compact flip phone at the touch of a button. It also has a 6.2-inch flexible OLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor, and a 16MP rear camera.


Why do manufacturers continue to push the envelope with thinness ? 

For one, a thin phone is generally more aesthetically pleasing and can be easier to carry around. It can also make it easier to reach all areas of the screen with your thumb, especially on larger devices. However, there are some trade-offs to consider – a thin phone may be more prone to damage, as it has less protection against drops and impacts. It may also have a shorter battery life due to the limited space for a battery.


The race for the thinnest phone is one that continues to captivate the tech industry. While thinness isn’t necessarily the most important factor in a smartphone, it is a feature that many consumers look for when making their purchasing decisions. As technology continues to advance, we may see even thinner phones in the future, but it remains to be seen if there is a practical limit to just how thin a phone can be.
